Admittedly, I haven’t spent nearly as much time as I probably should have diving deep into nearly 100 years of Lions history. Normally, going through that kind of archive would take days, maybe weeks. But for me, it’s hard to label any game as the greatest in franchise history if I didn’t actually watch or experience it firsthand. That automatically rules out the first 65 years or so of the team’s existence. So my picks mostly start from around 1995 onward.

One game that immediately comes to mind is Matthew Stafford’s legendary comeback against the Dallas Cowboys, ending with the unforgettable fake spike touchdown. That 2013 thriller saw the Lions overcome a 10-point deficit, with a remarkable 24-point fourth quarter, showcasing Stafford’s incredible playmaking under pressure.

Still, that game is probably remembered more for its ending than for being an all-time classic from start to finish. If you factor in stakes, the 2023-24 Wild Card showdown with the Rams deserves serious consideration. Stafford returning to Detroit, Jared Goff facing his former team, and the Lions’ first playoff game at Ford Field set the perfect stage. It was tight all game, with the Lions only leading by more than a single score briefly before the Rams responded. While the final eight minutes didn’t include any scoring, the Lions still executed crucial plays to seal the victory, including a red zone stop and a second-and-9 conversion to clinch the win.

But if you’re looking for a game that blended high stakes with an electric finish, one underrated candidate is the Lions’ 2023 30-24 victory over the Minnesota Vikings to clinch their first division title in 30 years. The matchup was tense, controversial, and packed with jaw-dropping plays from Justin Jefferson, culminating in Ifeatu Melifonwu’s incredible interception to close out the game.
