According to the New York Post, the team has been delaying its roster announcement because they’re considering adding a righty bat. Tyler Ward, host of the WardyNYM podcast, pointed out the irony: Jose Iglesias, who fit that need perfectly, was on their roster last year, but they chose not to bring him back.
Iglesias Finds a New Home in San Diego
Iglesias, a career .283 hitter, had an impressive .337 average in 270 at-bats for the Mets in 2024. Instead of keeping him, the team let him go, and he ended up signing a minor league deal with the Padres. That deal was worth $3 million if he made the Major League roster—which he reportedly has.
Ward understands the Mets’ logic—they wanted to give younger players a shot—but with Jeff McNeil injured and Nick Madrigal out for the season, the move is now looking questionable. The team had been considering a platoon of Brett Baty and Luisangel Acuña, but if they bring in a veteran infielder, Acuña could be sent down to Triple-A.
Mets May Have Made a Costly Mistake
Looking at the current market, Ward doesn’t see any good replacement options. Iglesias, he argues, was the best fit—not just for his skill but also as a mentor to young infielders like Acuña, Jett Williams, Ronnie Mauricio, and Baty.
The Mets had the right guy all along but chose to move on. Now, scrambling at the last minute, they might be realizing just how big of a mistake that was.
