The Mets might not really need Starling Marte anymore, and that’s becoming clearer with the way things are shaking out at third base. Brett Baty is still proving himself, but Mark Vientos’ struggles on defense are making it hard to justify giving him regular time at third. The good news is his bat is finally showing up the way we hoped. So, if Baty can keep hitting well—especially against righties—he should be the one manning third. That would give the team a better defensive setup and cut into Marte’s playing time even more.

Let’s be real—Marte isn’t really standing out in any area these days. He’s not hitting the ball hard enough for anyone to say he’s just unlucky. It looks like age might be catching up with him.

And when Jesse Winker comes back, things could get even more crowded if Baty and Vientos keep producing. At the start of the season, a lot of people were wondering how long Marte would stay on the roster. While the Mets haven’t reached the point of cutting him yet, it’s going to take a serious bounce-back for him to stick around through the 2025 season.
