Although the rezoning plan has been approved, it’s important to note that this does not automatically guarantee the development of a casino. City Planning Commission Chair, Dan Garodnick, clarified that the vote was not about the casino itself but about ensuring the best development approach for a constrained site, especially considering its proximity to an active railway.
New York’s appetite for gaming is growing, especially after the state legalized online sports betting in 2022, regularly surpassing $2bn in monthly wagers. This highlights the state’s ongoing interest in expanding its gaming footprint, and while there are no integrated resorts in New York City yet, the Western Rail Yards proposal could change that. Additionally, the development includes 5.6 acres of public space, which would enhance the local community’s appeal, regardless of whether a casino is built.
