The New York Mets were dealt a tough hand when their young catcher, Francisco Alvarez, broke a bone in his left hand back in early March. The injury required surgery, and he was expected to miss 6-8 weeks. But just before the Mets kicked off their 2025 season on April 4 with a 5-0 win over Toronto, manager Carlos Mendoza shared some good news: Alvarez is healing faster than expected.

Alvarez has been quick to get back into action, even catching a bullpen session from starter Kodai Senga and taking some swings in the cage. The Mets are eager to get the power-hitting catcher back, as he hit 23 homers in 2023 and was solid behind the plate.

In the meantime, the Mets have relied on Luis Torrens to fill in. Torrens, known more for his defensive skills, stepped up big early on this season. Through the first four games of 2025, he had a .313 batting average and three extra-base hits, including a home run. He also surprised by throwing out 50% of runners attempting to steal, which is the best ratio in the league.

Behind Torrens is Hayden Senger, a rookie who made his MLB debut as a defensive replacement. Despite his minor league struggles at the plate, Senger has shown promise, earning the Mets’ Platinum Glove Award last year. He even picked up his first major-league hit on April 2 with a double.

When Alvarez returns, Senger will likely head back to the minors, and Torrens will resume his backup role. The Mets have managed to get by despite missing Alvarez in the lineup, but to make matters worse, starting second baseman Jeff McNeil is also sidelined with an oblique injury. That’s allowed young infielders Luisangel Acuna and Bret Baty to step in, showcasing their versatility.

Despite these setbacks, the Mets have managed to stay afloat early in the season, with help from their role players. Last year, these players were key in helping the Mets make a deep playoff run. Though they haven’t won a pennant since 2015 or a World Series since 1986, they’re hoping to make another playoff push in 2025.
