Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons is no stranger to change. This offseason, he faces yet another transition as the team brings in its third defensive coordinator in as many years. With Dan Quinn departing, the Cowboys have turned to Matt Eberflus to lead the defense in 2025. While Parsons acknowledges the challenge, he’s prepared to adjust.
“It’s just learning a new system and getting another coach’s adjustments to how I like to play, what I like to do . . . and implicate me,” Parsons said, via the team’s website. “Obviously, it is challenging with a third [defensive coordinator] and is obviously not the greatest thing in the world but, I mean, that’s part of being a pro. You’ve got to make adjustments.”
Eberflus is known for coaching disciplined, turnover-focused defenses. During his time with the Indianapolis Colts, his units consistently ranked among the league’s best in takeaways. He also spent several years in Dallas as the linebackers coach from 2011 to 2018, so he’s already familiar with the Cowboys’ culture. His arrival suggests a shift toward a more structured, fundamentals-driven approach—something that could complement Parsons’ relentless playing style.
Unlike Quinn’s aggressive, high-pressure defense, Eberflus emphasizes effort, discipline, and sound technique. This change might take some getting used to, but it could ultimately help Parsons refine his already elite skill set.
Despite the constant changes, Parsons has remained a dominant force. Even after missing four games in 2024 due to a high ankle sprain, he has never recorded fewer than 12 sacks in a season. His ability to excel regardless of the defensive scheme highlights his adaptability and value.
The Cowboys are counting on Eberflus to revamp a defense that struggled last season. Parsons will once again have to adjust to a new system, but if history is any indication, he’ll continue to be a game-changing force on the field.
