WASHINGTON (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have placed outfielder Kerry Carpenter on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain, retroactive to Monday. Carpenter, 27, is batting .257 with 16 home runs and 32 RBIs this season. He exited Sunday’s game against Minnesota in the fifth inning for a pinch runner.
Manager A.J. Hinch said Carpenter’s injury is mild but emphasized caution, adding, “This is the second time we’ve had a scare with him on the field. We need to give him a break and hope he’s ready after the All-Star break.”
To fill Carpenter’s spot, the Tigers recalled infielder Trey Sweeney from Triple-A Toledo ahead of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Washington Nationals. Sweeney, who was optioned to the minors Saturday, is hitting .221 with four homers and 23 RBIs in 70 games.
“I joked with him that he fixed everything in 48 hours,” Hinch said. “But I’m glad he’s back. His versatility matters as our roster fills up.”
The Tigers also placed pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long on the 15-day injured list with neck stiffness and called up right-hander Tyler Owens from Toledo. Left-hander Bailey Horn was added as the 27th man for Wednesday’s doubleheader.
Detroit’s rotation could soon get a boost with right-hander Reese Olson nearing a return from a finger injury that’s sidelined him since May 18. Olson, 4-3 with a 2.96 ERA this season, is expected to rejoin the team after one more outing.
“His next start will be in the big leagues,” Hinch said. “It probably won’t be here in Washington, but he’s doing fine.”
