The Mets are making moves after their playoff run to the NLCS, landing superstar Juan Soto with a 15-year, $765 million deal. But there’s drama with Pete Alonso, one of their key players, who’s now a free agent.
New York sports legend Tiki Barber isn’t holding back. Speaking on WFAN Sports Radio, Barber blamed Alonso himself for the mess. According to him, Alonso made a poor choice hiring Scott Boras as his agent, hoping to snag a mega deal. While Alonso’s good, Barber pointed out he’s no Juan Soto and probably overestimated his market value.
Alonso’s 2024 stats were solid—34 homers, 88 RBIs, and a .788 OPS—but his .240 batting average didn’t help his case. The Mets reportedly rejected Alonso’s offer to sign a shorter three-year deal, leaving his future up in the air.
Looks like Alonso’s free agency will be one to watch as the offseason unfolds.
