Tom Izzo, Michigan State’s legendary basketball coach, recently drew parallels between his coaching philosophy and that of Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell. After leading the Spartans to a victory over Ohio State, Izzo took the time to watch the Lions’ thrilling 31-9 win over the Vikings, which helped Detroit clinch the NFC North and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
Izzo, now in his 30th season at Michigan State, praised Campbell’s aggressive coaching style, particularly his willingness to go for it on fourth down. This bold approach reflects a deep trust in his players, a sentiment Izzo admires and believes in. “It tells your team I trust you, I believe in you, we’re going to get this done,” said Izzo. The Lions’ resilience and grit under Campbell’s leadership resonate with Izzo, who also values these qualities in his own team.
As an Iron Mountain native and long-time Packers fan, Izzo admits to having been skeptical of Campbell’s approach early on but has since come to appreciate its effectiveness in transforming the Lions into contenders. He likens Campbell’s toughness to that of a Yooper, saying he could endure the harshest conditions and still prevail.
Izzo also reflected on the passionate football culture in Detroit, calling it “a football town like no football town.” He believes the Lions’ current success is not only a victory for the team but for the entire state of Michigan, and he’s proud to see the city’s long-suffering fan base finally reaping the rewards.
In a similar vein, Izzo’s Spartans have also shown depth and resilience, currently riding a seven-game winning streak and looking to continue their success against Washington on Thursday.
