Which Detroit Lions coaches could join Aaron Glenn’s new journey in New York?

Aaron Glenn’s move from Detroit Lions defensive coordinator to head coach of the New York Jets marks a significant career milestone. However, with such transitions often comes the possibility of staff reshuffling. Glenn, a key figure in Detroit’s resurgence, is likely to consider bringing along familiar faces to help establish his vision in New York.

As Glenn assembles his staff, he may look to some Lions assistants for their expertise. The ultimate decision, however, will rest on whether these coaches prefer opportunities for promotion in Detroit or are tempted by a fresh start with Glenn. Here are four assistants from Detroit who could follow Glenn to the Jets.

1. Quarterbacks Coach Mark Brunell

Mark Brunell appears to be the most likely candidate to follow Glenn. Reports from Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports suggest Brunell could take on the role of offensive coordinator with the Jets. While there were rumors of him joining Ben Johnson in Jacksonville, the former NFL quarterback seems more inclined to accompany Glenn to New York.

Brunell’s four years as the Lions’ quarterbacks coach have helped solidify his reputation as a promising offensive mind. Although he lacks extensive coaching experience—his only NFL coaching stint being with Detroit—his long playing career, including a brief stint with the Jets, makes him a strong contender for the offensive coordinator role under Glenn.

2. Defensive Assistant/Outside Linebackers Coach David Corrao

David Corrao’s relationship with Glenn is another strong connection. Having worked with Glenn during his seven-year tenure with the Lions, Corrao transitioned from Director of Football Research to working directly with outside linebackers in 2022. Glenn has frequently praised Corrao’s contributions, making him a natural candidate for a defensive role in New York.

If Corrao doesn’t receive a promotion on Dan Campbell’s restructured coaching staff, an offer from Glenn to join the Jets may be hard to ignore. His prior collegiate experience and NFL tenure, including his time with the Miami Dolphins alongside Campbell, further solidify his credentials.

3. Assistant Linebackers Coach Shaun Dion Hamilton

Shaun Dion Hamilton, a former player-turned-coach, has rapidly climbed the ranks in Detroit. After retiring from playing in 2022, Hamilton joined the Lions as a defensive assistant and now serves as the assistant linebackers coach. His adaptability, demonstrated by his work with defensive backs at the 2023 Senior Bowl, makes him an intriguing option for Glenn’s staff.

Given Hamilton’s progression under Glenn’s mentorship, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Jets’ new head coach advocated for him as a linebackers coach in New York. Such a move could provide Hamilton with a well-earned promotion.

4. Assistant Special Teams Coordinator Jett Modkins

Jett Modkins is another potential candidate for Glenn’s new team. Although Modkins has interviewed for special teams coordinator roles elsewhere, including with the San Francisco 49ers, he may consider joining Glenn in New York if those opportunities don’t materialize.

Glenn has reportedly shown interest in veteran special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff, but Modkins could remain on his radar for a supporting or alternate role. Modkins’ experience and rising profile make him a valuable asset for any coaching staff.

Building a New Legacy in New York

Aaron Glenn’s transition to head coach brings with it the challenge of assembling a cohesive staff to support his vision. While his familiarity with Lions assistants makes them attractive options, much depends on whether these individuals are willing to leave Detroit for potential promotions in New York.

For Glenn, incorporating trusted allies like Brunell, Corrao, Hamilton, and Modkins could ensure a smoother adjustment to his new role. For the assistants, the opportunity to grow under Glenn’s leadership in New York may be the next step in their careers. As the Jets begin a new chapter, these familiar faces from Detroit could play key roles in shaping the team’s future.
