What should be the Detroit Lions’ top priority as they approach the 2025 offseason?

It feels harsh to shift gears toward the offseason, especially when just a day ago, visions of a Super Bowl trip to New Orleans were alive and well. But such is the nature of the NFL playoffs—dreams can be shattered in a heartbeat, leaving fans and teams to reflect on what went wrong.

However, in the NFL, there’s no such thing as downtime. The offseason is a chance to rebuild, regroup, and prepare for another run. The story of Dan Campbell and his Detroit Lions isn’t over—it’s far from it. Over the next seven months, Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes will be tasked with refining the roster, addressing weaknesses, and ensuring this moment becomes the team’s lowest point moving forward.

Saturday’s playoff loss to the Commanders served as a stark reminder that while the Lions are a strong team, they’re not without flaws. There’s always room for improvement, and in Detroit’s case, it’s likely more than we previously thought during their impressive run this season.

So, the big question now is: What is the Lions’ top priority this offseason?

Coaching staff stability is an obvious starting point. With the season concluded, we’ll soon learn if Detroit retains zero, one, or both of their coordinators. Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson will be free to interview for head coaching roles this week, and it’s possible one or both could depart. Should that happen, the Lions will need to decide whether to promote internally or launch an external search for replacements.

Beyond coaching, the Lions must address the defensive line. Injuries were a significant issue this year, with key players like Aidan Hutchinson, Alim McNeill, and Marcus Davenport missing time. Reserve players like Kyle Peko, Mekhi Wingo, and John Cominsky also dealt with setbacks. But even when healthy, the defensive line lacked consistent firepower.

The secondary bore the brunt of the team’s inconsistent pass rush, and when cracks finally appeared, the defense struggled to hold its ground. While Hutchinson and McNeill’s return will bolster the unit, the team still needs more help. Who will consistently pressure the quarterback opposite Hutchinson? Can Detroit find a reliable third edge rusher? Injuries may have been a factor, but the Lions need more depth and talent up front. This offseason is about retooling for another shot at greatness.
