Trade Talk Heats Up: Could Jameson Williams Really Join the Bears?

After a breakout season in 2024, Jameson Williams finally gave Detroit Lions fans a reason to believe he was worth that first-round pick. With 58 receptions, 1,001 yards, and 7 touchdowns, he looked every bit the deep threat the team envisioned when they drafted him. But just as he’s beginning to blossom, rumors are heating up — and they’re coming from an unexpected place.

According to a trade scenario floated by CBS Sports’ Bryan DeArdo, the Lions could send Williams to their biggest rival: the Chicago Bears. It’s a wild idea, but it’s one that has some logic behind it. Former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is now leading the Bears, and he’s the same coach who helped Williams thrive. With rookie QB Caleb Williams under center in Chicago, adding a speedy target like Jameson could make sense.

Still, trading him to a division rival? That’s tough to imagine. Especially considering Johnson knows exactly how to utilize his talents. Watching Williams go off twice a year in a Bears uniform would be a hard pill for Lions fans — and the front office — to swallow.

The Lions also have a major decision coming up. By May 1, they need to decide whether to exercise Williams’ fifth-year option, which would guarantee him $15.4 million in 2026. While his production in 2024 suggests he’s earned it, there’s also the matter of off-field concerns and Detroit’s tightening salary cap, with stars like Aidan Hutchinson and Jahmyr Gibbs also due for big paydays.

While a trade inside the division still feels far-fetched, the NFL is unpredictable — and Brad Holmes has shown he won’t shy away from bold moves. If the Lions have doubts about Williams long-term, they might listen to offers. But moving a rising star like him would be a massive gamble.
