The San Francisco 49ers could make a blockbuster move for Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson, but financial hurdles may stand in the way.
Hendrickson, who has 35 sacks over the past two seasons, has been granted permission to seek a trade as he looks for a contract extension. If the 49ers were to land him, he’d immediately form one of the league’s most dominant pass-rushing duos alongside Nick Bosa. In fact, based on production, Hendrickson has outperformed Bosa in recent years.
The problem? Money. The 49ers have already set aside cap space for Brock Purdy’s future contract extension, making it difficult to commit to Hendrickson as well. If San Francisco were to make a shocking move—like trading Purdy before the draft—then acquiring Hendrickson could become a realistic possibility. But as things stand, the 49ers appear more committed to keeping Purdy and prioritizing their budget accordingly.
For now, a trade seems unlikely, but if the 49ers decide to shake things up, Hendrickson could be a game-changing addition.
