Some players just can’t seem to stay out of the headlines—and for former Detroit Lions safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, that reputation has followed him straight into Houston.
The NFL is no stranger to fiery personalities, especially during training camp. But Gardner-Johnson is already proving that he might bring more heat than his new team bargained for.

Let’s set the scene: it’s another hot day at Houston Texans training camp, tensions are high, pads are popping—and suddenly, so are tempers.
During a seemingly routine reception, Gardner-Johnson reportedly ran rookie tight end Cade Stover into the ground. The hit wasn’t taken lightly. According to Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle, Stover wasn’t having it. The tight end pushed back—literally—and the two exchanged heated words.
“Stover pushed C.J. Gardner-Johnson and words were exchanged. The two players had to be separated,” Alexander shared on social media.
We don’t know what was said, but based on the energy? It probably wasn’t “Nice to meet you.”
🚨 Not His First Rodeo
This isn’t Gardner-Johnson’s first dust-up. In fact, he’s now with his fourth team in five seasons—not exactly a model of long-term locker room harmony.
His time in Detroit in 2023 wasn’t exactly a fairy tale, either. Despite being seen as one of the league’s top safeties, things ended on a sour note.
“I got lied to, so it was, whatever,” he told Detroit Free Press when asked about his departure.
“I got told, respectfully, I was going to get brought back and didn’t get brought back.”
Oof. We’ve all been ghosted before, but getting ghosted by an NFL team? That hits differently.
Still, Gardner-Johnson seems determined to use that frustration as fuel—and clearly, he’s not pulling any punches in Houston.

Let’s be clear: CJ is talented. There’s a reason the Texans were eager to scoop him up after his run with the Eagles and Lions. He’s fast, physical, and has a knack for disrupting both plays and wide receivers’ egos.
