Trump Expected to Pull the Plug on Planned Parenthood Funding

The Trump administration is reportedly planning to freeze about $20 million in federal funding for Planned Parenthood and other family planning programs. This move is part of a broader effort to ensure that organizations receiving government grants comply with Trump’s executive order to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

According to the  Wall Street Journal, around $120 million in federal grants meant for services like pregnancy testing, birth control access, infertility treatments, and STD care could be put on hold. Planned Parenthood clinics in about 12 states would be affected by this freeze, as the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) reviews whether recipients are using funds for DEI-related efforts.

A spokesperson for HHS confirmed that the department is scrutinizing grant contracts to ensure they align with Trump’s policies.

Conservatives have long pushed to cut federal funding to Planned Parenthood due to its role in providing abortions. During Trump’s first term, the organization left the Title X program after new rules prevented participants from referring patients for abortions. President Biden later reversed those rules.

The funding freeze could also face legal challenges. Judges have already blocked similar efforts by the Trump administration, arguing that such moves may be unconstitutional. It remains unclear how this latest action will play out in court.

For now, Planned Parenthood and other affected organizations are waiting to see how the administration proceeds.
