Trump Renominates Andrea R. Lucas to EEOC for Another Term
President Donald Trump has decided to keep Andrea R. Lucas at the helm of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), nominating her for another five-year term. Lucas, who first joined the EEOC in 2020 after Trump picked her during his first term, is currently serving as Acting Chair.
“I’m honored to be nominated again to lead the EEOC, the country’s top civil rights agency for workplace discrimination laws,” Lucas said. “If confirmed, I look forward to ensuring fair enforcement of employment rights for all Americans. That includes clearing up some long-standing civil rights rules that have been muddied by uneven enforcement in recent years.”
What Lucas Has Been Up To
In just her first two months as Acting Chair, Lucas has already made some big moves, including:
– Cracking down on DEI-related discrimination in top law firms.
– Teaming up with the Justice Department to provide guidance on DEI issues for workers and employers.
– Pledging to hold universities accountable for antisemitism in campus workplaces.
– Refocusing the EEOC’s mission on protecting American workers from anti-American bias.
– Pushing back against “gender ideology” in the workplace to prioritize women’s rights.
Lucas’ Background
Before stepping into her role at the EEOC, Lucas worked as a labor and employment lawyer at a major international firm in Washington, D.C. She also clerked for a federal judge in Virginia earlier in her career.
The EEOC is the federal agency responsible for investigating and enforcing workplace discrimination laws against private employers. For government employers, the EEOC shares responsibilities with the Department of Justice.
