Egypt and Jordan aren’t on board with Donald Trump’s idea to relocate large numbers of Palestinians from Gaza to their countries. They’re worried it could spark unrest at home, so they’re expected to reject the proposal outright. However, to stay on Trump’s good side and keep U.S. aid flowing, they might allow smaller, more gradual resettlements through illegal smuggling routes.
Trump’s proposal, which has stirred up international backlash—especially from the Arab world—came up during a call with Jordan’s King Abdullah II on Jan. 25. Trump suggested building housing, either temporary or permanent, to move about a million Palestinians from Gaza to Jordan as part of an effort to “clean out” the war-torn territory.
That same day, while speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump floated a similar idea for Egypt, saying he had spoken with the country’s president about accepting more Palestinians from Gaza.
The proposal is highly controversial, and so far, neither Egypt nor Jordan seems willing to go along with it—at least not in any official capacity.
