Could the Rams Move On from a Longtime Locker Room Leader?
The Los Angeles Rams are heading into the 2025 offseason with major decisions on the horizon. As they reshape their roster, even long-standing veterans may not be safe. Cooper Kupp’s future is already being explored in trade discussions, while quarterback Matthew Stafford faces ongoing retirement speculation. However, another familiar name could be on the chopping block—tight end Tyler Higbee.
Tyler Higbee’s Future in Los Angeles is in Doubt
Higbee has been a key piece of the Rams’ offense for nearly a decade, playing a crucial role in their Super Bowl LVI victory and multiple deep playoff runs. The veteran tight end even signed a contract extension in 2023, seemingly securing his place on the team for the near future. But with the Rams looking to free up cap space and inject fresh talent into their offense, Higbee’s time in L.A. may be running out.
Salary Cap Considerations Could Lead to Higbee’s Release
Financially, parting ways with Higbee makes sense. The tight end carries a $9.6 million cap hit for 2025, with $6.2 million in dead cap if the Rams decide to move on. While L.A. currently holds over $38 million in cap space, general manager Les Snead has a history of making tough cuts to ensure financial flexibility. Higbee’s declining production and injury history only add to the likelihood of his departure.
Declining Production and Injury Concerns
Once a reliable target in the passing game, Higbee has struggled to maintain his production. After a career-best 72 catches in 2022, his numbers dipped to 47 receptions for 495 yards in 2023. In 2024, those figures plummeted to just eight catches for 66 yards. Multiple injuries, including an ACL tear and other lingering issues, have taken their toll on the veteran tight end. While he remains a respected figure in the locker room, his availability and effectiveness are in question.
Time for the Rams to Reset at Tight End?
The Rams’ tight end group has been a weak spot despite their top-10 passing offense. Colby Parkinson led the position with just 30 receptions last season, while Hunter Long has yet to make a significant impact since arriving in the Jalen Ramsey trade. Cutting Higbee would create an opportunity for the team to invest in younger talent through the draft or free agency.
Will the Rams Move On?
While Kupp remains the more intriguing trade piece, Higbee appears to be the likelier candidate for release. His combination of age, injury history, and salary makes him a prime target if the Rams decide to shake up their roster. If this is the end of Higbee’s time in L.A., it will mark the departure of one of the last remaining links to the team’s two Super Bowl appearances under Sean McVay.
