The Detroit Lions received confirmation on one of their worst fears this week, as safety Brian Branch underwent successful Achilles surgery and is expected to be sidelined for 8 to 12 months.
While the surgery itself went well, the timeline confirms that Branch will miss the remainder of the season and likely much of the 2026 offseason program. For a player who quickly became one of Detroit’s most impactful defenders, the loss is massive — both schematically and emotionally.
Branch had been a tone-setter in the Lions’ secondary, providing versatility as a safety, slot defender, and blitzer. His ability to disguise coverages and make plays near the line of scrimmage allowed Detroit’s defense to be aggressive. Without him, the Lions are now forced to rely on depth players and recent signings as they attempt to stabilize an already injury-hit secondary.
Head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged earlier that losing Branch “was going to hurt,” and this update only reinforces that reality. Detroit will now have to adjust its defensive approach, leaning more heavily on simplified coverages and pass-rush pressure to protect the back end.
The focus now shifts to Branch’s recovery. Achilles injuries are among the toughest in football, but at just 23 years old, the Lions are optimistic he can return strong with time and proper rehab.
For now, Detroit moves forward without one of its brightest young stars — hoping the rest of the roster can rally as the playoff push intensifies.
