Colby Sorsdal might be feeling the heat heading into his second season with the Detroit Lions. After the team picked up some fresh talent in the NFL Draft, his spot on the roster isn’t as secure as it once was.
The Lions grabbed Georgia guard Tate Ratledge in the second round, and later moved up in the draft to snag LSU’s Miles Frazier. Add those guys to the team’s previous investments on the offensive line, and now there’s serious competition—especially at right guard.
According to Jeff Risdon from USA Today’s Lions Wire, things are getting crowded. He pointed out that Frazier is now the third right guard the team has drafted in the last two years, joining Christian Mahogany (drafted last year) and the newly added Ratledge. They’re all eyeing the same starting spot left open after Kevin Zeitler went to the Titans in free agency.
Mahogany already got some action last season and looked solid, and Ratledge brings a ton of college experience—playing almost all of his snaps at right guard. That doesn’t leave a lot of breathing room for Sorsdal, who only played in one game last season after seeing more time on the field in his rookie year.
Detroit’s offensive line was a major reason the team’s offense was so strong in 2024, so the bar is high. And with all this new talent, guys like Sorsdal will have to prove they belong.
As for Ratledge, he might be the big win of the draft for Detroit. Some experts thought he could go in the first round, but he slipped to the second—lucky for the Lions. Analysts praise his toughness, strength, and attitude, saying he fits right in with head coach Dan Campbell’s style.
He’s got things to work on, like improving his technique in pass protection, but he’s got the tools to become a long-term starter. So now, all eyes are on training camp to see who earns that starting job—and who gets left behind.
