Queensland Cabinet Approves New Victoria Park Stadium for Brisbane 2032, Scraps Other Key Projects
The Queensland government has officially signed off on the Brisbane 2032 Olympic plan, which includes the construction of a new stadium at Victoria Park. This move will be the centerpiece of the new Olympic precinct, though it comes with the cancellation of several other planned projects. The state cabinet’s approval includes redirecting funds and efforts to focus on this major infrastructure project.
Premier David Crisafulli has committed to spreading more events across regional Queensland, addressing growing concerns over the heavy concentration of Olympic activities in the southeast of the state. His announcement is a response to dissatisfaction with the stadium plan, especially from sports organizations and regional communities. “This is a plan to ensure we deliver lasting infrastructure and host a remarkable Games when the world turns its eyes to us,” said Crisafulli.
The new 60,000-seat stadium at Victoria Park will be a key element of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic legacy, likely adjacent to the National Aquatic Centre and near the athletes’ village at the Brisbane Showgrounds. However, the project faces challenges, particularly in securing federal funding. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is pushing for $2.5 billion to fund the Brisbane Live Arena, which would replace the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Boondall. Crisafulli’s government is hoping to shift resources to prioritize the stadium and other venues, leaving some projects behind.
The Queensland government had originally hoped to finalize negotiations during the federal election campaign, but with delays from Cyclone Alfred, the situation has become more complex. Meanwhile, some sports are voicing concerns about venue suitability, especially with venues like Rockhampton being proposed for certain events.
Rowing Australia has raised issues about moving the rowing events to Rockhampton’s Fitzroy River, questioning its readiness for the Olympic and Paralympic regattas. Sarah Cook, CEO of Rowing Australia, acknowledged the challenges but joked about the presence of crocodiles in the river.
Hockey officials are also concerned about the possibility of temporary facilities at Ballymore, with discussions continuing about a more permanent and cost-effective solution on the Gold Coast. Despite these concerns, the Gold Coast remains a leading contender for the venue.
Other Olympic events may be split across multiple regions, with the government considering hosting basketball finals at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre and sailing events between Whitsundays and Townsville. This regional distribution is part of the broader strategy to address dissatisfaction with the south-east-centered Olympic infrastructure plan.
As the cabinet prepares to finalize the details, Crisafulli and other ministers will travel across Queensland to promote the Games and address the concerns of regional communities.
