The Minnesota Vikings are reportedly parting ways with quarterback Sam Darnold after just one season, a move that could make life a little easier for the Detroit Lions in the NFC North race.
After a breakout 2024 season where Darnold put up career-best numbers and led the Vikings to a 14-3 record, his playoff run was cut short with a Wild Card loss to the Rams. Now, Minnesota is looking ahead, likely handing the reins to rookie J.J. McCarthy while also considering adding a veteran like Daniel Jones or even Aaron Rodgers.
Meanwhile, with the Vikings in transition at QB, the Lions—led by Jared Goff—have a clearer path to dominating the division again. Detroit already secured back-to-back NFC North titles, and with Dan Campbell’s squad still loaded with talent, their chances of making another deep playoff run look strong.
Darnold, set to hit free agency on March 12, might not be out of options, though. With the Seahawks trading Geno Smith, he could land somewhere in the NFC West. Wherever he ends up, one thing’s for sure—his time in Minnesota is over, and that’s news the Lions won’t mind hearing.
