Just when it looked like the Minnesota Vikings were running out of options, two familiar faces have re-emerged — and right before their high-stakes matchup against the Detroit Lions. The Vikings promoted Fabian Moreau and Nick Vannett from the practice squad, and both could play sneaky-important roles in Week 9.
Fabian Moreau Returns to Patch Up the Secondary
Cornerback Fabian Moreau is back on the active roster for the first time since Week 2, stepping in for Jeff Okudah, who’s sidelined with a concussion. Moreau, a veteran who’s bounced around with Washington, Denver, Atlanta, and New York, brings much-needed experience to a secondary that’s been hit hard by injuries.
The Vikings currently sit 8th against the pass, and with the Lions’ aerial attack ranked 12th, every defensive snap will matter. Moreau’s ability to read routes and disrupt timing could be key in keeping Jared Goff’s rhythm off-balance.
Nick Vannett’s Chance to Shine
Tight end Nick Vannett might not be a household name, but don’t be surprised if he shows up on the highlight reel this Sunday. With Josh Oliver out due to a foot injury, Vannett could see more snaps — and maybe even a red zone target or two.
The Lions’ secondary, already missing Kerby Joseph, will be stretched thin trying to contain T.J. Hockenson and the Vikings’ wideouts. That’s where Vannett could sneak in — a veteran with good hands who knows how to find space when defenses overcommit.
Can the Vikings Stay Afloat?
It’s been a rough start for Minnesota at 3–4, and the injury list isn’t helping. With key players like C.J. Ham, Brian O’Neill, and Andrew Van Ginkel still questionable, the Vikings are betting on grit, depth, and maybe a little luck to stay in the NFC North race.
If Moreau locks down his side and Vannett finds daylight in the end zone, these “surprise” call-ups might just be the spark the Vikings need to flip their season around.
