Warning from Within: Cruz Says Trump’s Tariffs Spell Trouble for the U.S.

Ted Cruz, a senior Republican from Texas and chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, raised concerns on Friday about the potential damage to the U.S. economy and the Republican Party if other countries retaliate against President Trump’s tariffs. He warned that if these tariffs remain in place and other nations impose similar taxes, it could lead to a severe tax hike for Americans and harm the global economy.

Although Cruz has been a strong supporter of Trump, he doesn’t like the idea of tariffs. He pointed out that while things might look good if other countries back down, the worst-case scenario would be massive tariffs on U.S. goods being imposed worldwide, which he said would be disastrous.

Cruz also shared that he spoke with representatives from major U.S. automakers like GM, Ford, and Chrysler, who said that these tariffs could raise the average price of their cars by $4,500 by June, as they struggle with supply chain delays. He added that foreign car companies might actually be at an advantage since they only pay one tariff while American companies face multiple fees for each part crossing borders.

Looking ahead to the 2026 midterm elections, Cruz warned that if the U.S. enters a deep recession, the political fallout could be disastrous for Republicans. Some within the party are now pushing for laws that would give Congress more control over future tariffs.
