The Detroit Lions have the week off — and honestly, that might be the only thing slowing them down right now.
After a 24-9 statement win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Lions head into their bye at 5-2, right where head coach Dan Campbell wants them: fired up, hungry, and getting healthy for the home stretch.
Gibbs Turns on the Jets
Running back Jahmyr Gibbs didn’t just have a good game — he had the kind of night that gets whispered about in highlight reels.
He racked up 218 total yards and two touchdowns, becoming the first player in franchise history (and only the 10th in NFL history) to post 135+ rushing yards, 80+ receiving yards, and two rushing scores in a single game.
“If you give him a crease, he’s going to make you pay,” said Bucs coach Todd Bowles. And pay they did.
The 22.23 MPH Blur
At one point, Gibbs hit 22.23 miles per hour on a 78-yard touchdown run, the second-fastest speed recorded by any player this season — and yes, the only man to run faster this year was also Gibbs.
Jared Goff, watching it unfold from the backfield, summed it up perfectly:
“I don’t know how many safeties in the league could catch him. So as soon as he gets there, it’s over.”
When your quarterback sounds like a fan watching fireworks, you know your running back is something special.
Campbell’s Crew Keeps Climbing
Head coach Dan Campbell couldn’t hide his satisfaction after the game — not just with Gibbs’ performance, but with how his short-handed defense held strong.
Despite missing multiple starters in the secondary and a one-game suspension for Brian Branch, Detroit’s defense allowed just nine points, broke up 12 passes, and snagged four sacks.
“It feels good to get to 5-2,” Campbell said. “I’m pleased with the team.”
He also added a message that sounds like both a warning and a promise:
“You know what’s on the horizon. The big push will be here. We get the divisional opponents, 10 (games) until the playoffs, and then it’s on.”
“We Hate Losing” — And It Shows
Gibbs put it even more simply after the game, wearing a Pistons jersey and Tigers cap like a Detroit native through and through:
“We hate losing. We’re always going to find a way to bounce back and get to our standards.”
And that’s been the story under Campbell. The Lions haven’t dropped back-to-back regular season games since 2022 — a streak powered by the same mentality Gibbs embodies every time he hits the field.
Eyes on the Horizon
After the bye, Detroit hosts the Minnesota Vikings on November 2, then faces a stretch of NFC showdowns that could define their season.
With Gibbs blazing through defenses and key players set to return, the Lions aren’t just dreaming about the playoffs anymore — they’re chasing something bigger.
And if Gibbs keeps running like this?
Detroit might just sprint there.
