What Brian Daboll Just Revealed About Play-Calling & Travis Hunter

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll isn’t ready to say whether he’ll be calling offensive plays in 2025. Speaking at the NFL owners’ meetings in Palm Beach, Florida, Daboll said he’ll decide closer to preseason and training camp.

“We’ll see what works best for the team,” he said.

Last year, Daboll took over play-calling duties, but it didn’t help—the Giants finished second-to-last in scoring and ended up with a brutal 3-14 record. Before that, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka handled play-calling, leading to mixed results: a playoff win in 2022, followed by a rough 2023 where the Giants ranked 30th in scoring.

Team owner John Mara has asked Daboll to seriously consider whether it’s in the team’s best interest for him to keep calling plays. But with two veteran quarterbacks (Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston) on the roster and possibly a rookie QB on the way, Daboll may be reluctant to let go of play-calling duties—especially if the offense improves.

Could the Giants Draft Travis Hunter?

If the Giants don’t land a quarterback with the third overall pick in the draft, could they take Colorado’s do-it-all star Travis Hunter? Daboll wouldn’t say for sure but admitted Hunter has been fun to evaluate.

“He’s a heck of a player,” Daboll said. “What he’s done on both sides of the ball is remarkable.”

The Quarterback Question

Finding a long-term QB remains priority number one. The Giants have added Wilson and Winston, but that doesn’t mean they won’t draft a quarterback. Daboll said they’re still evaluating prospects.

“You do your best to find the right guy for your team,” he said. “It’s about whether the player fits where you’re picking and if he’s the right guy for your system.”

Daboll won’t be attending Colorado’s Pro Day to watch Shedeur Sanders throw, saying he prefers private workouts.

Daboll’s Deep Dive on Russell Wilson

Before signing Wilson, Daboll watched every single play from his 13-year career.

“He makes good decisions, he’s athletic—maybe not as much as he was in ‘13 or ‘14—but he can still extend plays and make things happen,” Daboll said. He also called Wilson “phenomenal” at throwing deep balls.

Now, the Giants just need to figure out whether Wilson is a temporary fix—or if their next franchise quarterback is waiting in the draft.
