For Lions rookie defensive tackle Tyleik Williams, the NFL learning curve hit hard during training camp — and he’s not shying away from it.
The former Ohio State standout had what he called a “welcome to the NFL” moment early in camp when he got a taste of what pro-level offensive line play feels like. Though he didn’t name names, Williams admitted that one of Detroit’s veteran linemen got the better of him in a rep that left a strong impression.
“It was one of those reps that reminds you real quick, you’re not in college anymore,” Williams said. “The technique, the strength — it’s all different up here.”
Despite the moment, the Lions’ coaching staff remains high on Williams. He’s shown flashes of power and explosiveness and is working closely with the team’s veterans to refine his technique. Defensive line coach John Scott Jr. noted that humbling moments like these are part of the growth process.
“He took it in stride,” Scott said. “He’s coachable, and he learns fast. That’s all we want to see.”
Williams may be sitting out the Hall of Fame Game, but there’s no doubt the Lions believe he’ll be a contributor in 2025 — once he fully adjusts to life in the NFL trenches.
