Get to Know: Defensive Lineman Ahmed Hassanein – The ‘Hassassin’ With a Heart for Greatness

From the bustling streets of Cairo, Egypt, to the intense grind of NFL training, Ahmed Hassanein’s journey is nothing short of remarkable. Nicknamed “The Hassassin” by Boise State fans and even his own brother, the Detroit Lions defensive lineman is more than just a force on the field — he’s a story of culture, grit, and faith.

Born in Cairo, Hassanein proudly claims it as his hometown. If you ever found yourself visiting Egypt with him, he says the Pyramids of Giza would be the first stop — a testament to the history and majesty that shaped his roots.

Academically, Ahmed didn’t settle for just one path. He majored in Interdisciplinary Studies, earning three minors — Business, Communications, and Leadership. Clearly, he’s someone who embraces learning just as fiercely as he tackles quarterbacks.

When asked who would play him in a movie about his life, he didn’t hesitate: “Denzel Washington.” And for entrance music? Fittingly, he chose “Walk Like an Egyptian” by The Bangles — a fun nod to his heritage.

Off the field, Hassanein has some unexpected talents. “Breakdancing,” he revealed with a grin. And if football weren’t in the picture, he’d likely be sweating it out in a CrossFit box somewhere.

His dream superpower? “Flash/speed. You blink and I’m already at the quarterback,” he joked — a mindset that certainly helps on the defensive line. If he had to switch positions, he’d suit up as a tight end.

When it comes to personal victories, Hassanein is deeply reflective. “Leaving the United States at six, living in Egypt for ten years, then coming back in 2018 — re-learning English, and not knowing anything about football — to be where I am now, that’s a big accomplishment.” He adds, “But my biggest accomplishment was just believing in God. It’s the biggest thing for me.”

His favorite athlete of all time? Aaron Donald. Favorite meal? A good medium steak. Favorite emoji? The smiling face with glasses — cool and composed, just like him.

As for Detroit, it’s the people who’ve left a mark. “Everyone in this organization is super nice. They coach me really hard, and I love that.”

And the one person he’d love to meet? Without hesitation: “Jesus.”
