Why Aaron Glenn Has Ben Johnson’s Full Respect in the Coaching GameHere’s a casual, clean rewrite of the article, with all unrelated clutter and formatting removed:
Bears’ Ben Johnson Praises Jets HC Aaron Glenn and OC Tanner Engstrand
At the recent NFL Annual League Meeting, new Bears head coach Ben Johnson had high praise for Jets head coach Aaron Glenn and his offensive coordinator, Tanner Engstrand.
Johnson, Glenn, and Engstrand all worked together in Detroit as part of the Lions’ turnaround from a 3-win team in 2021 to NFC North champs in 2023–24. Glenn was the Lions’ defensive coordinator, Johnson ran the offense, and Engstrand rose through the ranks from quality control coach to tight ends coach and eventually passing game coordinator.
“Aaron’s one of the most unique communicators I’ve ever worked with,” Johnson said. “He played at a high level, he can coach, and he knows the scouting side too you just don’t find that combo often. He’ll push players, but they’ll love playing for him. He’s got that rare mix.”
Johnson also spoke highly of Engstrand, who’s taking over play-calling duties for the first time in the NFL.
“Tanner and I have a shared path we both started at the bottom and worked our way up,” Johnson said. “He’s smart, quick on his feet, and really understands game management. He was a huge part of what we built in Detroit.”
Engstrand’s resume includes time under Jim Harbaugh at both San Diego and Michigan, plus a stint as offensive coordinator for the XFL’s DC Defenders in 2020.
As for what the Jets’ offense might look like under Engstrand? Johnson says it’ll evolve, especially with a different kind of quarterback in Justin Fields.
“You don’t really know until you get on the field this spring,” Johnson said. “But Tanner’s going to lay the foundation, then adapt based on what works best with the talent he’s got just like I’ll be doing with Caleb Williams in Chicago.”
