Why Alabama’s New Defensive Coordinator Is Feeling Good About Spring Progress

Alabama’s new defensive coordinator, Kane Wommack, is feeling pretty optimistic after spring practices. His main goal going into this offseason? Build a more reliable defense with depth—especially after last season’s injury issues forced some inexperienced players to step up too soon.

Wommack pointed out a specific game against Tennessee where Alabama’s defense got hit hard. By the second half, five of their top six defensive backs were out, and the lack of backup options really showed. So this spring was all about making sure that doesn’t happen again.

“We wanted to build depth we can actually trust,” Wommack said. “You need guys who can step in and execute when it really counts.”

According to Wommack, a bunch of players have started to show real growth and could be key backups or even future starters. Some of the names getting attention include Jeremiah Beaman, Edric Hill, Jordan Renaud, Kelby Collins, Dre Kirkpatrick Jr., Dijon Lee, Cam Calhoun, QB Reese, Nikhai Hill-Green, and James Smith.

Bottom line: Alabama’s defense took a solid step forward this spring, and Wommack seems pumped about the progress they’re making.
