Why ‘Home Alone 2’ Director Couldn’t Remove Trump  No Matter How Much He Wanted To

Home Alone 2 Director Explains Why He Couldn’t Cut Trump’s Cameo  Even Though He Wanted To

Chris Columbus, the director of *Home Alone 2: Lost in New York*, just admitted that he wishes Donald Trump’s cameo in the movie was gone  but says there’s no way he can actually cut it.

If you’ve seen the classic 1992 movie, you’ll remember the quick scene where Kevin (played by Macaulay Culkin) asks Trump for directions inside the Plaza Hotel, which Trump owned back then. Now, over 30 years later, Columbus is calling that moment a total “albatross”  basically a curse hanging over the film.

In a recent interview with the  San Francisco Chronicle, Columbus joked that if he tried to cut Trump out now, he’d probably get kicked out of the country. He went on to explain how Trump basically forced his way into the movie, saying that back in the day, Trump only allowed them to film at the Plaza if he got a part in the film. So they had no choice but to say yes.

Trump, of course, had a different version of the story. In 2023, he jumped on Truth Social to claim he didn’t really want to be in the movie, but the filmmakers were “persistent” and begged him. He said his tiny role helped make the movie a hit and accused Columbus of trying to use his name for attention decades later.

Looking back, Columbus said that when they first screened the movie in Chicago, the audience actually loved Trump’s cameo  cheering and laughing. At the time, he was shocked because he didn’t think it was funny at all. Now, years later, he admits the scene feels more like a burden than a funny moment.

Columbus made it clear he never begged Trump to be in the movie  they just really needed access to the Plaza, and that was the deal. But now, he says, “it’s there, and it’s become an albatross for me. I just wish it was gone.”
