Will Mike Tomlin Let Arthur Smith Decide the Steelers’ QB Situation?
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback situation is shaping up to be one of the biggest storylines of the offseason, with tensions reportedly emerging between offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and veteran QB Russell Wilson. According to recent reports, Wilson’s preference for a more aggressive passing attack clashed with Smith’s run-heavy philosophy, creating friction in the latter half of the 2024 season.
NFL analyst Bart Scott weighed in on ESPN’s Get Up, emphasizing that Wilson’s experience and past success make it difficult for him to thrive under Smith’s rigid play-calling.
“You’re telling a potentially borderline Hall of Fame quarterback that he doesn’t have any options at the line of scrimmage,” Scott said, noting that such restrictions might work for a younger quarterback like Justin Fields but not for a Super Bowl-winning veteran like Wilson.
This raises a major question: Who will have the final say on the Steelers’ quarterback decision—Tomlin or Smith?
How Much Control Does Arthur Smith Have?
Traditionally, Mike Tomlin has been viewed as the Steelers’ primary decision-maker, particularly when it comes to personnel choices. However, Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo suggested on 93.7 The Fan that Tomlin gives Smith significant autonomy over the offense.
“It’s Arthur’s offense,” Fittipaldo stated. “I think Mike does leave a lot to Arthur, and he kind of lets him operate on his own.”
If that’s the case, Smith’s influence could play a major role in whether Wilson or Fields stays in Pittsburgh. Given Smith’s preference for a structured, run-heavy system, he may lean toward Fields, who is younger and more mobile, over Wilson, whose best years as a scrambler are behind him.
Could This Push Wilson Out?
Tomlin has reportedly been a strong supporter of Wilson, favoring him as the starter throughout the 2024 season when healthy. However, the growing rift between Wilson and Smith may complicate any potential re-signing. If Smith remains committed to his system and is unwilling to adapt, Wilson may opt to test free agency rather than return to a situation where his ability to call audibles is restricted.
With the new league year set to begin on March 12, the Steelers’ front office faces a crucial decision. Do they prioritize Wilson’s experience and leadership, or do they side with Smith and move forward with Fields or another quarterback option?
