Detroit Must Decide on Key Offensive Line Piece
As the Detroit Lions head into the 2025 offseason, one of their biggest questions revolves around veteran guard Kevin Zeitler. The 34-year-old lineman, who played a crucial role in Detroit’s offensive line success last season, is now an unrestricted free agent. After delivering a near All-Pro-level performance in 2024, the Lions must weigh the pros and cons of bringing Zeitler back for another season.
A Crucial Addition in 2024
Detroit’s offensive line was in flux heading into the 2024 season after Jonah Jackson signed with the Los Angeles Rams. Rather than waiting for the draft, the Lions moved quickly to secure Zeitler on a one-year, $6 million deal. The experienced guard came in with a reputation for durability and excellence in pass protection, making him a natural fit for Detroit’s high-powered offense.
His presence required some adjustments, particularly for Graham Glasgow, who had to shift to the left side to accommodate Zeitler at right guard. Despite early concerns about this transition, Detroit’s offensive line remained one of the league’s best, thanks in large part to Zeitler’s consistency and veteran leadership.
Performance That Matched Expectations
Zeitler did exactly what the Lions hoped he would: provide stability and high-level play. Over the course of 16 games, he played more than 1,000 snaps and posted some of the best blocking grades of his career.
While he did surrender a career-high five sacks, much of that came early in the season as he adjusted to Detroit’s system. Offensive line coach Hank Fraley acknowledged the early struggles but praised Zeitler’s impact on the team:

Should the Lions Bring Him Back?
Now the Lions must decide whether to offer Zeitler another contract or look for a younger replacement. There are compelling arguments on both sides.
Why Re-Signing Zeitler Makes Sense
Continuity and Stability: Bringing Zeitler back keeps Detroit’s offensive line intact, ensuring quarterback Jared Goff has protection and the running game remains strong.
Proven Performance: Even at 34, Zeitler showed no signs of decline. His presence would allow younger players like Christian Mahogany to develop without being thrust into a starting role too soon.
Short-Term Flexibility: A one-year deal in the $6-7 million range wouldn’t break the bank and allows Detroit to reassess next offseason.
Reasons to Move On
Age and Long-Term Planning: Zeitler will turn 35 before the season starts. While he played at a high level in 2024, relying on him long-term is risky.
Draft and Development: The Lions could use this opportunity to develop Mahogany or invest in a younger guard through the draft.
Other Roster Priorities: Detroit has pressing needs on the defensive line, linebacker, and wide receiver. Allocating resources to a 35-year-old guard might not be the best use of cap space.
What Will Detroit Do?
The Lions’ front office, including general manager Brad Holmes, has expressed satisfaction with Zeitler’s performance. Holmes acknowledged that Zeitler needed time to adjust to Detroit’s system but was pleased with how he settled in:
“A player of that age, you’ve just got to have conversations with him. We had conversations on exit day and then we’ll just continue to have dialog and just kind of see where it goes.”
If Zeitler wants to keep playing, Detroit seems open to his return. The question is whether both sides can agree on the right contract. Given the Lions’ financial flexibility for 2025, a one-year deal similar to last season seems likely—unless another team swoops in with a higher offer.
Final Verdict: Should the Lions Re-Sign Zeitler?
While Detroit has younger options at guard, Zeitler’s performance in 2024 proved he still has plenty left in the tank. If he’s willing to return on a team-friendly deal, keeping him for another year makes sense. His veteran leadership and high-level blocking could be critical for a team with championship aspirations.
