Will the Lions Re-Sign Their Veteran Starter? O-Line Future Hangs in Balance

Lions Face Key Decision on Kevin Zeitler as Free Agency Nears

The Detroit Lions’ offensive line has been a major strength, but a key decision looms with veteran right guard Kevin Zeitler set to hit free agency. While the team is expected to prioritize defense this offseason, retaining Zeitler could be one of their most important moves on offense.

Zeitler, 34, was a perfect fit in Detroit’s system last season, earning Pro Football Focus’ third-highest run-blocking grade among guards. He played over 1,000 snaps, allowing five sacks and providing a stabilizing presence in the trenches. Given his strong play and experience, re-signing him would be the best move for continuity and consistency up front.

The Lions signed Zeitler to a one-year, $6 million deal last season, and a similar contract would be a bargain. However, if negotiations get competitive, Detroit could explore alternatives like Brandon Scherff, Will Hernandez, or a reunion with Evan Brown. General manager Brad Holmes has emphasized that building through the trenches will always be a priority, making the decision on Zeitler one to watch closely as free agency approaches.
