Windy City Heist: Bears Land Lions’ Explosive Return Man

The Chicago Bears aren’t done raiding the Detroit Lions’ roster. After snagging Ben Johnson as their new head coach, they’ve now picked up wide receiver and return specialist Maurice Alexander Jr. on a reserve/futures contract.

Alexander, 28, has mostly been a practice squad guy for the Lions over the last three seasons, though he’s played in seven NFL games. His resume isn’t flashy—one catch for seven yards and some solid but limited return work—but he was a standout returner in the USFL back in 2022 and shined in college at Florida International.

More Lions Connections? Bears Eyeing O-Line Help

Chicago might not be done shopping in Detroit. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox suggests the Bears should go after offensive guard Kevin Zeitler, who spent 2024 with the Lions. Zeitler, 35, is a veteran with a long history of durability and solid play, though his age is a factor. He started 16 games last season and could bring much-needed experience to Chicago’s offensive line.

But the Bears have bigger fish in mind, too. Chiefs guard Trey Smith is also on their radar. At just 25, Smith is one of the best young linemen in the league and is about to hit free agency—assuming Kansas City doesn’t lock him up first. With a potential price tag north of $20 million per year, he won’t come cheap.

Bears Have Big Decisions to Make

Even if Chicago lands Smith, they could still target Zeitler. Their top lineman from 2024, Teven Jenkins, is a free agent, meaning they may need to replace both guard spots. With three early draft picks, they have options, but adding a veteran like Zeitler on a short-term deal could be a smart move.

The Bears are clearly looking to upgrade, and with free agency approaching, they’re in a prime position to make some big moves.
