Former Lions EDGE Za’Darius Smith Could Be a Fit for the 49ers
Za’Darius Smith didn’t stay a Detroit Lion for long, and now that he’s a free agent, teams are lining up as potential landing spots. According to Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton, the San Francisco 49ers could be a great fit for the veteran pass-rusher.
Smith, who turned 32 last season, proved he’s still got plenty left in the tank. Between his time with the Browns and Lions, he racked up 35 tackles, nine tackles for loss, nine sacks, and 25 pressures. Detroit brought him in just before the 2024 trade deadline to help fill the void left by Aidan Hutchinson’s injury, and he delivered.
Despite his solid production, the Lions released him before free agency started, possibly to clear cap space. Smith was projected to make around $11 million in 2025, which might have been more than Detroit was willing to commit. Now, he’s one of the top veteran edge rushers available, and teams like the 49ers, who always prioritize a strong defensive front, could benefit from his experience and versatility.
Could a reunion with Detroit still be on the table? Maybe, but for now, Smith looks like a prime candidate to land with a playoff contender that needs help getting after the quarterback.
