3 Lions Players, Including Hendon Hooker, Who Might Be on the Trade Block

Detroit Faces Tough Roster Decisions in Pursuit of Super Bowl Glory

The Detroit Lions have emerged as legitimate contenders, but after another playoff heartbreak, the front office is under pressure to fine-tune the roster. While general manager Brad Holmes has downplayed trade speculation, the reality is that the Lions are in a Super Bowl window—one that remains open but is beginning to narrow.

Detroit’s offseason strategy has largely focused on drafting and developing talent, but a major trade could shake up that philosophy. Whether due to a diminishing role, contract concerns, or a lack of long-term fit, the following three players could be on the move before the 2025 season kicks off.

1. Hendon Hooker – Quarterback

Hendon Hooker’s time in Detroit has been underwhelming, and the signs are clear that the organization doesn’t view him as a long-term backup to Jared Goff. Despite speculation that the Lions might keep three quarterbacks on the active roster last summer, Hooker barely edged out Nate Sudfeld for the No. 2 spot.

His limited game action in 2024—mostly in blowout situations—was hardly enough to evaluate his potential. Yet, Detroit’s apparent lack of confidence in him was evident when they brought back veteran Teddy Bridgewater late in the season. When the playoffs arrived, it was Bridgewater, not Hooker, who served as Goff’s backup.

Hooker, now 27 and halfway through his rookie contract, remains a tradeable asset. Given Detroit’s reported interest in quarterbacks like Daniel Jones during the season, it’s clear the team is looking for a more reliable No. 2 option. A trade could land Hooker in a situation where he has a better chance to compete for playing time.

2. Josh Paschal – Defensive End

A former second-round pick, Josh Paschal has struggled to make a lasting impact in Detroit. Over three seasons, he has managed just five sacks while missing 15 games. While his 34 quarterback pressures in 2024 look promising, his pass rush win rate (5.5%) ranked outside the top 100 among edge rushers, according to Pro Football Focus.

Paschal’s inconsistency has left the Lions with a glaring need at edge rusher, and with one year left on his rookie contract, his time in Detroit could be running out. A trade to a team like the New York Jets—where former Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn now leads the defense—could offer him a fresh start.

3. Kalif Raymond – Wide Receiver

Despite missing five games in 2024, Kalif Raymond led the NFL in punt return yards (413) and ranked third in punt return average (13.8). However, his offensive role has significantly diminished over the past two seasons. In 2024, he recorded just 17 catches for 215 yards.

Raymond remains a valuable special teams asset and a respected locker-room presence, but his $6.4 million cap hit in the final year of his contract is hard to ignore. The Lions could restructure his deal, but if a trade package emerges, Detroit might be willing to part ways with him.

Final Thoughts

The Lions have been patient with their roster construction, but if they want to capitalize on their Super Bowl aspirations, they may need to make tough decisions. Whether it’s Hooker, Paschal, or Raymond, these players could be prime candidates for a move as Detroit reshapes its roster for a deep playoff run.
