The Detroit Lions are coming off one of their best seasons in franchise history — 15 wins, another NFC North crown, and a playoff run that got everyone dreaming of the Super Bowl. But if they want to take that next step in 2025, there are still a few trouble spots they need to clean up.
Here are five numbers from last season that could make or break Detroit’s Super Bowl hopes this time around:
1. 62 – Explosive Passes Allowed
Detroit gave up 62 completions of 20+ yards last season — second worst in the entire NFL. Opponents averaged over 30 yards on those plays. With young corner Terrion Arnold expected to take a big step forward and veteran D.J. Reed now in the mix, the Lions are hoping for much tighter coverage in 2025.
2. 12 – Goff’s Interceptions
Jared Goff threw 12 interceptions for the second straight year — plus three more in that playoff heartbreaker against Washington. While some of that came from pushing the ball downfield more, limiting turnovers is still a key area where Goff can clean things up.
3. 37 – Team Sacks
Detroit finished with just 37 sacks last season, ranking 23rd in the league. Injuries to key players like Aidan Hutchinson, Marcus Davenport, and Alim McNeill played a huge role in that. If they can stay healthy and get more out of their pass rush group, this number should jump significantly.
4. 19 – Pass Interference Penalties
Only Washington had more pass interference calls than Detroit last year. While the Lions’ aggressive, man-heavy coverage style invites some flags, 274 yards lost to PI calls can’t continue if this defense wants to tighten up in the postseason.
5. 31.1 – Kickoff Return Yards Allowed
Detroit’s special teams were strong in most areas, but they struggled big time on kickoff coverage. Opponents averaged over 31 yards per return. With new NFL rules expected to lead to more returns this season, this part of the game suddenly matters a lot more.

These might seem like small stats, but in the NFL, the little things add up fast. Clean up these five numbers, and Detroit could be booking tickets to Super Bowl LX.
