The first round of the 2025 NFL Draft is in the books, and the Detroit Lions made a statement by selecting defensive lineman Tyleik Williams. The Ohio State standout is heading to the Motor City, but not everyone’s convinced it was the perfect move.
National media reactions have been pretty mixed—some praising Williams’ potential as a run-stopper, others questioning his pass-rushing upside. CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco handed the pick a C+, noting Williams brings much-needed depth but suggesting an edge rusher might’ve been a better fit. NFL.com was more optimistic, giving a B+ and pointing to Williams’ quickness for a 330-pounder and relentless motor.
Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski said the pick “fits the mold” of what Detroit is building on the defensive line, while USA Today and Sports Illustrated both gave C+ grades, raising doubts about whether Williams has the tools to become a true impact player on passing downs. Still, his ability to stuff the run could make him a valuable piece, especially with Alim McNeill working his way back from injury.
Yahoo Sports’ Charles McDonald gave the Lions one of the stronger reviews—a B grade—calling Williams a “big run plugger” who could be a long-term answer in the trenches.
Detroit clearly has a type up front, and Tyleik Williams fits it to a tee. Now, it’s up to him to prove he’s more than just a big body on the line.
