Several members of the Detroit Lions are mourning the loss of former teammate Chris Payton-Jones, who reportedly died in a car crash in Florida on Saturday night.
Payton-Jones initially joined Detroit as an undrafted free agent in 2018 after playing four years at Nebraska. Although he didn’t make the roster that year, he returned in 2020 after time with the Arizona Cardinals, appearing in one game for the Lions that season.
Despite limited time on the field in Detroit, he left a strong impression on teammates. Following news of his passing, several former players shared tributes on social media, including Quandre Diggs, Amik Robertson, Kerryon Johnson, Tyrell Crosby, and Darius Slay.
Over his career, Payton-Jones also spent time with multiple teams, including the Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans, and Las Vegas Raiders. He later played in the United Football League, where he became a standout with the St. Louis Battlehawks and Seattle Sea Dragons, recording 74 tackles and two interceptions across three seasons.
He was also known for connecting with fans through YouTube, where he shared insights into life as a professional football player. Earlier this year, he announced his retirement from the sport.
The United Football League released a statement honoring him, describing him as a respected teammate and leader who brought energy, humility, and authenticity both on and off the field.
His passing has left a strong emotional impact on former teammates and the wider football community.
