The Detroit Lions have seen their fair share of shakeups since their playoff run ended in January, especially on the coaching staff. One of the biggest changes? The arrival of David Shaw, who’s stepping in as the Lions’ new passing game coordinator after Tanner Engstrand left to join the Jets.
But even with all the turnover, there’s a familiar face setting the tone: Jared Goff.
It’s early in the offseason, but Goff is already making a strong impression on Shaw, who didn’t hold back when talking about the veteran QB. “There’s a hunger in Jared, and I think it’s great… you can feel it,” Shaw said. “He’s trying to play up to his standard and bring everybody up along with him.”
That’s the kind of energy the Lions need, especially with Goff coming off a disappointing playoff performance that included three interceptions and a fumble in a tough loss to Washington. That game still lingers—and you can tell Goff hasn’t forgotten either.
Add in the departure of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, and there’s even more pressure on Goff to keep the offense firing. But instead of shrinking, Goff seems to be stepping up—early and loudly.
Shaw, who brings a wealth of experience from his Stanford days and a recent stint with the Broncos, has only been around Goff for a short time. Still, he already senses something different—something urgent. And if that energy spreads across the locker room, the Lions could be in for something special this fall.
Over four seasons in Detroit, Goff has racked up nearly 17,000 passing yards with 115 touchdowns. But 2025 feels like it means more. And based on what we’re hearing from inside the building, Goff knows it too.
