The Detroit Lions have come a long way since 2022, but despite their rise, they’ve come up just short of the ultimate prize: the Super Bowl. And while fans are still frustrated by two straight playoff heartbreaks, no one seems to be carrying it harder than wide receiver Jameson Williams.
Detroit’s 2024 playoff run ended in gut-wrenching fashion, with the Lions blowing a halftime lead in the NFC Championship Game against the 49ers. Then last year, they locked up home-field advantage and a first-round bye, only to be upset by the Washington Commanders in the Divisional Round.
While most fans are still stinging from the most recent collapse, Williams points to the 49ers loss as the one that really cut deep.
> “People don’t realize how bad it hurts until you’re one game away from the Super Bowl,” Williams said. “That loss to San Francisco—that was the one. That was the one that hurt the most.”
He isn’t just wallowing in the pain, though. Williams says the team still feels that chip on their shoulder—but they’re channeling it into motivation for the upcoming season.
> “We remember it, but we’re not dwelling on it,” he added. “It’s there when we need that extra push.”
Heading into his fourth season, Williams sounds locked in. His new offensive coordinator John Morton is impressed, and Dan Campbell remains a strong believer in what he brings to the field. Williams credits his work ethic to his father, saying he’s always had the mindset to “outwork everybody.”
> “I’ve got a little pep in my step now,” he said. “I’m becoming a vet. I’m ready to be more consistent and help this team win.”
If he can stay healthy and focused, Jameson Williams might be exactly what the Lions need to finally get over the hump and turn playoff pain into championship glory.
