Crimson Tide Land Top Illinois Talent: Mack Sutter Commits to Alabama

The Alabama Crimson Tide have struck gold in the Midwest again — this time securing a commitment from standout defensive lineman Mack Sutter out of Dunlap, Illinois.

Sutter, a four-star prospect and one of the top defensive players in the state, announced his decision on Monday afternoon via a live stream on social media. The 6’4″, 265-pound lineman chose Alabama over finalists Michigan, Iowa, and Illinois — giving the Crimson Tide yet another key piece in their top-five 2025 recruiting class.

> “Alabama is where I see myself growing the most — as a player, a leader, and a man,” Sutter said during the announcement. “They’ve built a standard down there, and I want to be part of that.”

A Midwest Monster Headed South

Known for his explosive first step and high motor, Sutter recorded 14.5 sacks and 22 tackles for loss during his junior year, drawing attention from Power Five schools nationwide. While many expected the in-state Illini to stay in contention until the end, Alabama’s consistent communication, national profile, and player development history ultimately won Sutter over.

Recruiting analysts describe Sutter as a potential game-wrecker at the college level.

> “He’s got SEC-ready size and plays with an edge,” said 247Sports Midwest analyst Allen Trieu. “Alabama fans should be very excited.”

Alabama Continues to Win on the Trail

Sutter’s commitment is another testament to head coach Kalen DeBoer’s smooth transition into the post-Nick Saban era. Though many questioned whether the Crimson Tide could maintain their recruiting dominance without Saban at the helm, DeBoer’s staff has silenced doubters by stacking talent across the board.

With Sutter on board, Alabama now holds 16 verbal commitments for the 2025 cycle, including five players ranked in the top 100 nationally.

Tough Loss for Big Ten Programs

Sutter’s pledge is a significant loss for Illinois, which had made him a top in-state priority. Michigan also made a strong late push, offering early playing time and a well-established defensive scheme under Sherrone Moore. But the allure of Tuscaloosa — and Alabama’s track record of sending defensive linemen to the NFL — proved too much to pass up.

What’s Next for Sutter

Sutter plans to enroll early at Alabama and compete for playing time as a freshman. He’ll join a defensive line room that has seen heavy rotation and is always in need of new contributors.

> “It’s not going to be easy,” Sutter said. “But I’m ready to earn it. I’m ready to bring that Midwest grit to the SEC.”

Bottom Line: The Crimson Tide just got stronger — and Mack Sutter is the kind of player who could be a difference-maker in the trenches for years to come.
