The Detroit Tigers have released an urgent injury update concerning starting pitcher Reese Olson, who was removed early from his last outing due to discomfort in his throwing arm.
Team officials confirmed Wednesday morning that Olson is experiencing inflammation in his right shoulder — a condition that will sideline him for at least the next two weeks. The team has not placed him on the 60-day injured list, but his status remains day-to-day pending further evaluation by medical staff.
“Reese reported some soreness after his last start, and out of precaution, we sent him for imaging,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters. “Right now, we’re looking at shoulder inflammation. We’re going to be cautious with his return timeline.”
The injury is a blow to a Tigers rotation that has leaned heavily on Olson’s consistency this season. The 25-year-old right-hander has been a bright spot in an otherwise up-and-down campaign, posting a 3.47 ERA with 98 strikeouts over 93.1 innings pitched.
In Olson’s absence, the Tigers are expected to shuffle their rotation, possibly calling up top pitching prospect Jackson Jobe or utilizing long-relief arms already on the roster.
“We’re exploring options internally,” Hinch added. “It’s still early, but we’re confident we have the depth to weather this.”
Fans and analysts alike are hoping the injury is minor and that Olson can make a swift return as the Tigers remain in the thick of the AL Central race.
More information is expected following Olson’s next evaluation later this week
