It was a rough Wednesday for most of the Detroit Tigers’ minor league squads, but Josue Briceño gave fans something to cheer about with his 15th homer of the year. Here’s the rundown from July 2:
🔹 Toledo Mud Hens got hammered 13-0 by Columbus despite a strong start from Wilkel Hernandez, who struck out eight before a disastrous fifth inning flipped the game. The Mud Hens only managed five baserunners all night, with Akil Baddoo doubling to start the first but never crossing home.
🔹 Erie SeaWolves fell 6-5 to Akron despite Chris Meyers’ two-homer night. Meyers blasted solo shots in the third and seventh innings, but a five-run fourth doomed Erie. The bullpen kept it close with scoreless work from Tanner Kohlhepp, Yosber Sanchez, and Jordan Marks.
🔹 West Michigan Whitecaps dropped a 5-2 contest to Great Lakes. Josue Briceño provided the highlight with a towering solo homer smoked at 112 mph, but the offense stalled. Starter Rayner Castillo struggled with command, issuing five walks in under four innings.
🔹 Lakeland Flying Tigers delivered the only win of the night, shutting out Dunedin 2-0. Luke Stofel was brilliant with five scoreless innings, lowering his ERA below 1.00. Sergio Tapia broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single in the seventh, and Lakeland’s bullpen locked it down from there.
Coming Up: Toledo, Erie, West Michigan, and Lakeland all return to action Thursday night with first pitches between 6:35 and 7:05 p.m. ET.
