Gleyber Torres’ leap from New York to Detroit is paying off in a big way. After seven seasons with the Yankees, the 28-year-old second baseman took a chance on the Tigers with a one-year, $15 million deal — and he’s already reaping the rewards. Fans just voted him into the All-Star Game for the third time in his career, his first as a Tiger.
Torres dove headfirst into his new city, learning about Detroit’s sports history and embracing the community. His strong start to the season — a .279 average, nine home runs, and 43 RBIs in 74 games — helped push the Tigers to the top of the AL Central as the first half winds down.
“This is the moment to represent Detroit, represent the fans at the All-Star Game and keep working hard,” Torres said. “We have to finish strong as a team.”
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch praised Torres’ impact, calling his signing a “good decision by all.” Hinch added, “He bet on himself coming to a young team as a veteran, and he’s delivered.”
Torres will be joined at the All-Star Game by teammates Javier Báez and Riley Greene, who were also voted in by fans. The trio hopes pitcher Tarik Skubal can join them, pending the player vote.
For Torres, the honor goes beyond stats: “It’s been pretty special. To go there and represent Detroit, it’s going to be an amazing experience.”
