In a major recruiting win for Nick Saban’s successor, the Alabama Crimson Tide has secured a commitment from one of the top defensive backs in the nation. Five-star safety Malik Anderson announced his decision on Saturday, choosing Alabama over fellow SEC powerhouse Georgia in what many had pegged as a tight race to the finish.
Anderson, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound prospect out of Buford High School in Georgia, is ranked as the No. 1 safety in the 2025 recruiting class by multiple services. With elite range, ball-hawking instincts, and a physical presence in the secondary, Anderson has long been considered a program-changing talent.
“I felt like Alabama was the best place for me to grow as a player and a person,” Anderson said during a live stream of his announcement. “The culture, the tradition, and the coaching staff made it feel like home.”
The decision marks a significant recruiting win for Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer, who continues to prove he can go head-to-head with Georgia’s Kirby Smart on the recruiting trail. For weeks, the Bulldogs were believed to be in pole position for Anderson, especially given his proximity to Athens and long-standing connections to the program.
However, Alabama’s persistence—and the appeal of its NFL pipeline—ultimately won out.
Anderson becomes the latest blue-chip addition to Alabama’s surging 2025 class, which now boasts four five-star commitments and solidifies its top-three national ranking. His commitment also addresses a key position of need for the Tide, who are looking to reload their secondary after multiple early NFL departures.
Georgia, meanwhile, will now look to pivot to other top targets in the defensive backfield, though Anderson’s decision is a notable blow to the Bulldogs’ efforts to lock down their in-state talent.
With National Signing Day still months away, the recruiting battle between Alabama and Georgia is far from over—but for now, it’s the Tide that walks away with a major win.
