Terrell Williams Gets Disrespectful Ranking in First Year as Patriots DC

After leading the Detroit Lions’ defensive line to success the past two years—including a run to the NFC Championship—Terrell Williams now takes on his first defensive coordinator job with the New England Patriots. Despite his proven track record coaching defensive fronts since 1998, a new ranking doesn’t show him much respect.

Pro Football Network placed Williams 30th out of 32 NFL defensive coordinators heading into the 2025 season. While it’s true this is his first time as a DC, that ranking seems harsh considering what he’s accomplished—and what the Patriots have added on defense.

New England loaded up in free agency, signing cornerback Carlton Davis III, who reunites with Williams after their time together in Detroit. Williams will also work with promising talents like Christian Barmore, Keion White, and Milton Williams, giving him a strong defensive line to mold.

Williams missed much of the Patriots’ offseason program while recovering from a health scare, but he stayed connected with head coach Mike Vrabel and his players through Zoom. The Lions finished fifth in the NFL against the run last season under his guidance, while the Patriots’ defense struggled, giving up nearly five yards per carry. Williams’ emphasis on stopping the run could be exactly what New England needs.

Yes, there’s still uncertainty about whether Williams or Vrabel will call defensive plays this season. But ranking him near the bottom doesn’t seem fair, especially considering his successful recent work. This low placement should give the Patriots extra motivation to exceed expectations—and Williams could quickly climb the rankings if his defense makes an impact this year.
