Jared Goff is still carrying emotional baggage from his Rams breakup

In the premiere episode of Season 2, which follows Goff’s 2024 journey with the Detroit Lions, the former No. 1 overall pick reflects on the 2021 blockbuster trade that sent him to Detroit in exchange for Matthew Stafford. And he’s not sugarcoating how it went down.

> “It was a blindside,” Goff says in the episode. “You feel like you’ve been betrayed, or like you’re not wanted.”

According to Goff, neither Sean McVay nor GM Les Snead gave him any heads-up that a trade was even on the table. One moment he was L.A.’s franchise QB, the next he was shipped off—finding out the news just seconds before it hit Twitter.

> “There was no conversation,” Goff said. “No ‘Hey, we’re thinking of moving on.’ Nothing. I just wish there was a level of maturity… to at least let me know what was happening.”

Harsh words, especially since the Rams went on to win a Super Bowl with Stafford the very next season. But the Netflix moment pulls back the curtain on a key part of the Rams’ rise—one that left their former quarterback feeling discarded.

Of course, not everyone agrees with Goff’s perspective. Critics point to the end of the 2020 season when he was benched in favor of John Wolford, and only returned to the field in the playoffs after Wolford was injured. Given that context, some say Goff should’ve seen it coming.

One writer even compared the situation to Baker Mayfield’s messy exit from Cleveland, suggesting teams can’t always afford to “warn” QBs they might be replaced—it can backfire if no upgrade is secured.

Still, Goff’s raw emotion in the doc reminds viewers that trades aren’t just business—they’re personal. And even though he’s now thriving in Detroit, helping the Lions break their playoff curse, it’s clear he hasn’t forgotten how things ended in L.A.
