Suh Sounds Off on Lions Departure: ‘It Was Bigger Than Football’

Former Lions All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is finally speaking candidly about his departure from Detroit — and he’s setting the record straight on what really went down.

In a recent interview, Suh didn’t shy away from reflecting on his exit, which came after five dominant seasons in the Motor City. Many fans believed the move was all about money, but Suh says it was deeper than that.

“It wasn’t just about a paycheck,” Suh said. “There were a lot of things behind the scenes — relationships, vision, trust. I had to make the best decision for myself and my future.”

Suh, who was drafted No. 2 overall by the Lions in 2010 and quickly became the face of their defense, left for the Miami Dolphins in 2015 on what was then the richest contract ever for a defensive player. His departure left a sour taste for some in Detroit, but Suh insists he still has love for the city and its fans.

“I’ll always respect the fans in Detroit,” he added. “They supported me from day one. I gave everything I had when I was there.”

Now retired and looking back, Suh seems at peace with the path he chose — but his comments reveal just how complicated and emotional that decision really was.
